Mixtape Review: Pill’s “The Epidemic”

by K1ngEljay

Rating: 7 / 10

After the well-documented departure from Maybach Music, many dismissed Pill and his music. After all, being publicly embarrassed by, arguably, the hottest label in the game is hard to come back from. However, instead of sulk, Pill kept right at work. The Epidemic is another addition to the rapper’s strong mixtape catalog; but would it live up to the pre-set and now, newfound pressures? The beginning of The Epidemic reflects its title; chaotic, confusing, and a little bit of everywhere. The intro, “Moving Out” has a heavy southern flavor to it, but proves to be unfulfilling. You sort of expected him to come out with a bang and address all the

Maffew Ragazino: Introducing One of New York’s Finest

by JP DelaCuesta

Hip-Hop has seen many ups and downs over the past several decades, but with a new unity and camaraderie forming in the Big Apple, a ton of new artists have been working together, supporting each other and creating some incredible music with hopes of bringing the focus back to the place where Hip-Hop was essentially born. Along with a new crop of aspiring MCs whose work ethic is comparable to artists in the past, Maffew Ragazino is one of the standout lyricists from the new stable of “New York’s finest.” The Brooklyn born, Brownsville native, released one of 2011′s most accomplished, well-rounded, and introspective projects with Rhyme Pays and is continuing to become a better artist and all around man with each passing second. A sentiment that his music certainly reflects. AllHipHop.com spent some time talking to Mr. Ragazino about his come-up, the monstrous “Home Team” record that dropped recently, what it meant to get a co-sign from DJ Premier, and how he plans to follow up his critically acclaimed 2011 project Rhyme Pays:

Additional artists to make the cut include Macklemore, Don Trip, Hopsin, Danny Brown, Kid Ink, Machine Gun Kelly and Roscoe Dash. XXL Magazine has revealed the cover for its 5th annual Freshman issue. Included on the cover are French Montana, Iggy Azalea, Machine Gun Kelly, Future, Hopsin, Macklemore, Don Trip, Danny Brown, Roscoe Dash and Kid Ink. "In the past five years that XXL has been picking Freshman classes, never once has making the list been easy," wrote XXL. "This year included. Similar to 2011, the hype around the Freshmen Class has continued to grow by leaps and bounds, surprising even us with its popularity. For this class the buzz began earlier than ever, four months before the cover was even shot. And it seemed like everyone had a list. From subdued music fans to diehard rap junkies, from Twitter stalkers to industry heavies and featherweights, folks wanted their list to be the XXL list. We listened, asked opinions, took notes."

EXCLUSIVE: DRAKE ADDRESSES DETRACTORS

by Lola Ogunnaike Of VIBE

DRAKE INVADED HIP-HOP AS A HUMBLE “EMO” RAP-SINGER FROM CANADA WITH THE USUAL DESIGNS ON “THE MONEY, THE CARS AND THE CLOTHES.” BUT WHILE YOU TOOK HIS HEARTACHE FOR NO-HEART, DRAKE CHANGED HIS GAME FACE AND FLEXED HIS BAD BOY MUSCLE. FROM THIS POINT ON, THERE IS NO MORE MR. NICE GUY –Lola Ogunnaike

Read excerpts from Drake’s Feb/Mar VIBE feature:

Drake has also made detractors of colleagues. So many subliminal disses have been hurled his way recently, it’s hard to keep track. Pusha T, Ludacris and Future have all had something to say about him. While most didn’t address him by name in their lyrics, Common, rap’s mild-mannered elder statesman, has admits he is referring to the young Canadian on the song “Sweet” when he raps: “Singing all around me man la la la/You ain’t no motherfucking Frank Sinatra.” … When asked about all of his alleged nemeses, Drake tries his hand at diplomacy. “I’ve got no issues with him,” he says of Future, who was upset that Drake didn’t appear in the video for his single “Tony Montana.” “I’m happy I got on the song.” Pusha T, who once cryptically rhymed that “the swag don’t match the sweaters,” gets off easy, too. “I’ve been really open about my love for the Clipse,” he says. “I don’t know, maybe that guy is bored.” Ludacris, who was accused of stealing Big Sean and Drake’s hashtag flow, also receives a halfhearted smackdown. “That’s a case of somebody trying to use my marketing money to get things going again for themselves. That didn’t affect my day, my month, my year. I didn’t take any of that seriously.” But when it comes to tossing off disses, Drake’s not above delivering his own veiled swipes these days. On “Dreams Money Can Buy,” he surveys the hip-hop landscape and decides he’s sorely disappointed by what he sees. “Lately it went from top five to remain- ing five,” he rhymes. “My favorite rappers either lost it or they ain’t alive.” He stops short of mentioning names, but doesn’t back away from his declaration. “I wasn’t in rap when I was idolizing a lot of these people,” he says. “But times change. People don’t sound the way they used to. It’s inevitable. Someday Drake won’t sound the way he used to. I’ll do anything in my power to still sound relevant, but unfortunately Drake may not. And yes,” he says with a chuckle, “I referred to myself in the third person.”

“[That Ludacris diss is] a case of somebody trying to use my marketing money to get things going again for themselves. That didn’t affect my day, my month, my year. I didn’t take any of that seriously.”

Hip-Hop Rumors: YMCMB Plans On Dropping 16 Albums This Year!?

by AHH Staff

All the news and rumors surrounding YMCMB and their recent signings has to make you really wonder how many artists will actually “live up to the hype” of the label once their projects get released. Can that much attention be dispersed throughout all of the projects to give them a fair shot at achieving success??? Only time will tell. In an AllHipHop.com interview a while back, Birdman revealed, “Well, we got a big roster coming next year. Nicki’s coming out…Tyga, Twist, Bow Wow, myself, Kevin Rudolph, Jay Sean. Wayne got another album, everybody. I mean, we’re gonna drop 10 to 14 albums in the first six months of the year, so everybody’s cocked and loaded. It’s all about the music first, and everything else comes after that. It’s music with us and then whatever else.” Well, it looks like Birdman LOWERED the anty to XXL, recently announcing his plans to drop 15+ albums this year, beginning with last week’s release of Tyga’s Careless World: Rise of the Last King which is set to debut with over 80,000 copies sold which is not a terrible look for the “Rack City” creator. He stated, “We’re a brand and we don’t want to be categorized as one type of brand.” Up next is Lil Twist’s Don’t Get It Twisted and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded which will both drop this spring, as will Birdman’s fifth studio album, Bigger Than Life and Bow Wow’s new project Underrated, so for the time being it’s all Rap-related for YMCMB at least until summertime. Then you’ve got Busta Rhymes, Mystikal, newly signed artists Christiana Milian, Limp Bizkit, and the rumored signing of Ashanti. Mix that in with Lil Wayne’s I Am Not A Human Being 2 and a possible new album from Drake and it’s going to be a busy year. How many more artists will ink with YMCMB this year, and which of their upcoming releases are you looking forward to most? Which are destined to fail? Will anyone besides Weezy, Nicki, and Drake really make any loot???? Questions!!!

Nipsey Hussle: On “The Marathon Continues”, Big K.R.I.T. Tracks & Motivation!

by Niki Gatewood
Photo by Jorge Peniche Doubt destroys; perspective is essential to formulating a plan and manifesting a dream. Ermias Asghedom, best known as “Nipsey Hussle,” refuses to allow doubt, or a faulty perspective, detour him from his chosen path. Hip-Hop heals, and Nipsey is using his voice as an MC, to strengthen and inspire his listeners. Throughout his life, Neighborhood Nip, has encountered both arduous and disheartening events. What happens when souls are snatched, names are locked away and replaced by numbers, and the American dream mocks one’s existence? Ask Nipsey; he knows. Rather than succumbing to the depths of personal despair, Nipsey, personifies perseverance. The booth is his therapist; cathartic lyrics release chaotic memories. While reality is ever-present in his rhymes, he continues to stimulate change through both his words and his actions. In the conclusion to this exclusive interview with AllHipHop.com, Nipsey Hussle speaks on The Marathon Continues, on future projects, and on his personal motivation.

AllHipHop.com: The Marathon Continues dropped in November 2011. Regarding your supporters, what types of reactions have you received?

Nipsey Hussle: I got mixed reactions from TMC. Some people loved it and said it was genius, that it was my best project. Other people said that it wasn’t f*cking with the first Marathon. I was trying something different with The Marathon Continues. I understood that I was risking it, because the sound changed a little bit. Personally, it’s one of my favorite projects that I’ve put out.

AllHipHop.com: It’s one of your favorites?

Nipsey Hussle: Yeah, I think so, for sure. Certain records on this project showed a side of me that I haven’t showed. The sound is different. It’s kinda like where I’m at right now. I felt like if I do something that I’ve already done, that’s cheating and that’s being lazy. So, I wanted to stretch out a little bit. I felt like I had given them so much concentrated, Nipsey, on The Marathon. I wanted to do a little experiment and try different things on TMC. It was a success for me. The numbers were bigger than any of my [other] projects. The first week’s downloads were bigger; the [subsequent] touring has been bigger. I believe that The Marathon was received better, as far as critically. But, that was a different project, and I had a different goal.

AllHipHop.com: When I initially listened to it, I wanted more substance. During the time you were recording it, did someone step on your heart? You seemed to be going hard on females.

Nipsey Hussle: Nah, I ain’t going to say that anybody stepped on my heart. On all the records, I don’t think I went hard on females. I went hard on females on “Thas What Hoes Do.” But, not on all the records, for example, on “Tha Mansion,” there were certain lines in there, with me being honest, and me being semi-humble. On other records, I was speaking towards different types of females. But, I don’t feel like I was going overboard hard on females. Is that how you took it?

AllHipHop.com: Yes. I was like, ‘Somebody please give Nipsey a hug!’

Nipsey Hussle: [laughter] Hell, nah!

AllHipHop.com: One thing I respect about you is that a lot of your music exudes a positive perspective. My favorite song by you is “Bigger Than Life.” It’s raw; you give us all of you.

Nipsey Hussle: Man, I did the “Bigger Than Life,” record the day before I dropped The Marathon. I wasn’t even going to put it on The Marathon. That’s why I put it as a hidden track. The tracklisting and the artwork was already done. We had already leaked it. So, when I did “Bigger Than Life,” I couldn’t add it to the playlist. At that point, I was in such a creative zone. I was locked in the studio for months—phone cut off—I hadn’t even been released from Epic. I was going through the process of getting off the label. You know, my business team had changed. It was a lot on my mind. So, I think that record was me getting everything off my chest, as best I could. It even moved me when I was making the record. In the booth, I caught a certain vibe. It was just a real time. As far as things I was going through in my personal life, and stuff that was going on in the streets, like you said, it came out as raw emotion. That’s the goal of music, to give off honest emotion. I feel like that’s one where I did the best job of just being honest, and putting it in a way that people can connect to it.

AllHipHop.com: It seems like there’s always hidden gems within your music. Who or what circumstances helped to give you a positive perspective/outlook on life?

Nipsey Hussle: If you have a voice and people are listening to you, I just feel like [you should] inspire, and motivate! If I’m in a room and there are 10 other people, I don’t want to be the negative force in the room. I want to be the positive force. If I’m in somebody’s lif,; I don’t want to be the negative force in their life. I want to be a positive force. Naturally, through my music, I want my overall theme to be positivity and motivational. It’s a dose of reality of what I do, too. It’s also a dose of, ‘This is how it is.’ Regardless of the situation, you can still make it happen. You can improve yourself and work on yourself. In my core, I believe that life is about evolving yourself from where you start. As long as you’re making progress, you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing. I would hate to be an artist that’s the bearer of bad news and doesn’t have a message. If you’re unwilling to give anything in return, it’s selfish to want money, and fame, and success. You got fans that are willing to pay for tickets to concerts, buying merchandise, buying albums and mixtapes; but, they’re not getting nothing from you? I don’t think that’s reality. That’s why a lot of artists only have temporary success, because they’re not giving people something that they can hold on to. Then you got other artists that the fans will love forever, because they feel like they got something from them. I always wanted to be one of those types of artists.

AllHipHop.com: I appreciate your work ethic; it’s reflected in your music.

Nipsey Hussle: That’s what’s up. I appreciate you. Thank you.

AllHipHop.com: 2012 is upon us, and you’re in grind-mode. You’ve worked with Dorrough, you’re on DJ T Fatz’ remix of Wiz Khalifa’s “It Could Be Easy”. What I want to know is when can we get that Big K.R.I.T. collab?

Nipsey Hussle: Man, that’s my folks. I f*ck with K.R.I.T. We haven’t spoken recently, but he’s extended family. He’s signed to Cinematic, also. Cinematic is owned by, Jon Shapiro. That’s who signed me to my first deal. He really gave me my first shot outside of my [former] management team. Jon was the one who walked me into Epic and got the deal situated. So, he was one of the early supporters o, Big K.R.I.T. He has a lot to do with his success and getting him on Def Jam. So, you know, we’re under the same umbrella. Big K.R.I.T. produced “One Take 3” on The Marathon.

AllHipHop.com: Oh, really?

Nipsey Hussle: Yeah, a lot of people don’t know that Big K.R.I.T. produced that. I would love to work with, K.R.I.T. I’m a fan first. In the future, it’s going to happen. When it’s right, timing will make it happen. I got you; we’ll put that together just for you.

AllHipHop.com: I’m so serious right now.

Nipsey Hussle: Yeah, no question.

AllHipHop.com: What other folks would you like to work with. I hear that there’s something in the works with Freddie Gibbs. What’s up?

Hussle: Freddie just sent me something. We’re talking about hitting the road together; so, we’ll probably make that happen. I’m probably going to work with Wiz [Khalifa] on some new stuff. I just did something with, Meek Mill. I did something with Vado. I’m working with K-Boy on his project. Who else? I’ve been doing a lot of features—Mac Miller, Chevy Woods. Me and YG are doing a project together. I just did a record for his new mixtape, 400 Degrees. A lot of people—man, we’re working right now. I got features everywhere—Yung Walt, that’s 1500’s artist. I did a record on his new project. We’re just working. If you got good music, and you reach out, I’m going to get it done. I’ll make it happen.

AllHipHop.com: May I ask you a couple personal questions?

Nipsey Hussle: Hell nah. Nothing personal.

AllHipHop.com: Damn, cutty, is that how you feel? Are you serious?

Nipsey Hussle: [laughter] Nah, I’m f*cking with you. Come on.

AllHipHop.com: You know that anybody can put info on Wiki. How old are you?

Nipsey Hussle: I’m 26.

AllHipHop.com: You’re only 26?

Nipsey Hussle: My birthday is not in January neither; my birthday is in August. They got me messed up on Wikipedia.

AllHipHop.com: So, on your ID it says 1985, not 1978?

Nipsey Hussle: Yeah, on my ID, it says ’85. I’m not one of them artists that going to lie about they age. That’s wack to me. I’m not an artist that’s going to lie about anything, really. Wikipedia got some false info up there, but it’s cool. I’m not mad at them. It’s user-driven; so, I can’t blame Wikipedia. They’re doing their best. I’m definitely not born in January. I’m definitely 26.

AllHipHop.com: So, you’re a young-and-tender.

Nipsey Hussle: Ah, sh*t.

AllHipHop.com: [laughter] From what perspective do you try to convey your message? Do you write from a visual or an emotional stance? Do you want us to see what you’re talking about, or to feel it?

Nipsey Hussle: Both, really. I think, feel it first and visualize it second. A lot of artists get real wordy as they paint the picture. Some artists just say certain things; it comes from a place where you just got to feel it. ‘Pac was one of them artist that you felt. Biggie was a visual artist. But, you know, they both had both of those qualities. Biggie leaned more towards [the] visual, and ‘Pac leaned more to the emotional. I try to do both; because they’re both an important part of songwriting. From my opinion, to be a complete artist, you have to be good at all that. Just naturally, you know, my music is more emotional than it is visual.

AllHipHop.com: I’m a word-nerd and into literature. I’ve read that you’re also an avid reader.

Nipsey Hussle: Absolutely.

AllHipHop.com: I didn’t know if I was over-analyzing your music; so, I have to ask, On “Tha Mansion” did you intentionally allude to Hemmingway?

Nipsey Hussle: I don’t think I intentionally did. What made you ask that?

AllHipHop.com: On “Tha Mansion” you say, “…bet if they say my name the bell rung…” That made me think of Hemmingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Nipsey Hussle: Throughout my reading career, I have got my hands on some of his material. It’s possible that it came out subliminally without me knowing. But it wasn’t intentional.

AllHipHop.com: You’re dope. How can your supporters continue to encourage your efforts?

Nipsey Hussle: Man, if they don’t do nothing else, they motivate me so much! I’m going to keep going based off what they already did. There was a point in time where I didn’t necessarily have the base, and the followers, and the actual fan support that I’ve got right now. To actually be able to sell out shows, and to drop projects and mixtapes, and they do big numbers when they come out. So, I’ve been so motivated by that. Seeing that people have been inspired by what I’ve already done, my mind is made up; ain’t no looking back! The fans don’t have to do nothing else; I’ve got them from here. I would love for them to keep supporting [me] and giving their feedback; being honest with how they feel about the music. When I go on Twitter and check my mentions, it’s majority positive feedback; that’s my biggest motivation. When I be in the streets, I have people come up to me and tell me certain things. You know what I mean, that’s my biggest motivation. More than album sells, and more than money, that’s how you know what you’re doing is working. When people come up to you, and tell you something that you know is sincere, and they couldn’t have faked it; to me, that’s the biggest motivation right there.

Behind The Scenes of Robin Thicke’s “Pretty Lil’ Heart” Video

by Kareem Taylor
R&B crooner Robin Thicke is working hard these days, gearing up a video to his much buzzed about, Lil Wayne-assisted song, “Pretty Lil’ Heart”. The 34-year-old says he’s trying to embody “a little bit of that old Hollywood charm,” with the video. Set in a bar, Thicke explains the song saying. “How can you trust that a person is doing you right?” Just a few days after the passing of legend Whitney Houston, Thicke released a cover of the Grammy-winning song “Exhale”. “Pretty Lil’ Heart” appears on Thicke’s fifth album release, Love After War, out in stores and on iTunes now.

Video: Wiz Khalifa Previews New Mixtape “Taylor Allderdice” At NYC Listening Event

by JP DelaCuesta
(AllHipHop News) Last night (February 27) at Jungle City Studios in New York City, Wiz Khalifa, Taylor Gang and Rostrum Records held a listening event for Wiz’s upcoming mixtape, Taylor Allderdice, which is set for release on March 13. In attendance were Wiz, Chevy Woods, Cardo, Mac Miller, Juicy J, Peter Rosenberg, the Rostrum Records crew, and a number of journalists, bloggers, and people who just overall wanted to experience a “Taylor Gang” party. While Taylor Allderdice is not set to drop for another two weeks, Wiz has released several songs from the project including tracks like “Mary 3X,” “California,” and “My Favorite.” And athough he didn’t go over the rest of the mixtape’s song titles, guests, or producers, it wasn’t too hard to figure out who was contributing to what. Taylor Gang’s own Chevy Woods and Juicy J feature on several of Taylor Allderdice‘s tracks, with verses also coming from recent signee Lola Luv, Harlem native Smoke DZA and a chorus sung by Wiz’s girlfriend, Amber Rose. On the production end, Taylor Allderdice features work from Taylor Gang’s own Cardo and Sledgren, as well as Spaceghostpurrp, Lex Luger, Harry Fraud, and Rob Halladay. Overall, Taylor Allderdice sounds like a true return to form for the Pittsburgh lyricist, who has gone on record recently to say that he wasn’t truly happy with the product he delivered on his Atlantic Records debut, Rolling Papers, a sentiment that has often been made clear by a number of fans in the time since the album’s was released. Check out AllHipHop.com’s footage of the listening event below: Wiz Khalifa’s new mixtape Taylor Allderdice drops on March 13.

Drake On Subliminal Disses From Pusha T: “I Don’t Know, Maybe That Guy Is Bored.”

The disdain for Drake is shared among a handful of folks in this industry. Whether it’s a dispute over hashtag rap (Ludacris), being deemed “Sweet” (Common), disagreeing with a certain method of finding out how scandalous these heffars are (Fabolous), opting out of remix video shoots (Future) or swag not matching the sweaters (Pusha T), there’s always a problem to be solved. But, Sherbert, a Young Canadian superstar who isn’t that much of a troublemaker, is resistant in firing back any well deserved shots at his “foes.” So resistant, that he remains optimistic towards them as well. And in the Lola Ogunnaike penned feature in the February issue of VIBE Magazine, the YM Prince explains just that. “I’ve got no issues with him,” he says of Future, who was upset that Drake didn’t appear in his video, “Tony Montana.” “I’m happy I got on the song.” Pusha T, who once cryptically rhymed that, “the swag doesn’t match the sweaters,” gets off easy, too. “I’ve been really open about my love for the Clipse,” he says. “I don’t know, maybe that guy is bored.” Ludacris, who was accused of stealing Big Sean and Drake’s hashtag flow, also receives a halfhearted smack down, “That’s a case of someone trying to use my marketing money to get things going again for themselves. That didn’t affect my day, my month, my year. I didn’t take any of that seriously.”

RCA Sued Over Art In Elle Varner/J.Cole Video

RCA Records has been hit with a lawsuit over artwork used in the video to Elle Varner and J.Cole’s single “I Only Wanna Give It To You.” Artist Maya Hayuk filed the lawsuit in United States District Court for Massachusetts on Friday (February 25). According to the lawsuit, Hayuk’s painting titled “Sunshine,” was used in Elle Varner’s video without permission. Maya Hayuk is a world renowned, Brooklyn-based visual artist, who has created paintings, murals and other works of art, that have been displayed around the country. According to the complaint, Hayuk created the “Sunshine” piece for the group Rye Rye, which at one point featured M.I.A. “In or around October 2011, RCA & Sony produced or otherwise commissioned the Video,” the lawsuit reads. “This Video includes numerous scenes that incorporate videographic reproductions of Hayuk’s Sunshine. Indeed, Hayuk’s original artwork is featured prominently in the Video and adds greatly to its mise-en-scéne. Hayuk did not authorize the use of Sunshine in the Video. Neither RCA nor Sony approached Hayuk seeking such authorization.” Hayuk claims RCA and Sony are illegally profiting off her work and she’s suing for damages. She is seeking a preliminary order enjoining RCA and Sony from all further reproduction of the art, the impoundment amd destruction of all the copies of the video, as well as an injunction preventing the video from being played.

Birdman, Slim and Fred Durst Discuss Limp Bizkit Deal

Cash Money Records founders Bryan and Ronald Williams recently discussed the growing roster of artists signed to Cash Money Records. Last week, the label announced they had signed Grammy nominated rock band Limp Bizkit to Cash Money/YMCMB Records. Limp Bizkit has already sold over 33 million albums worldwide and toured the globe. “The Cash Money Records and YMCMB family continues to grow and work in various music genres as shown by the addition of Limp Bizkit,” Bryan “Birdman” Williams told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “We have always admired how they have been able to blend rock and Hip-Hop and will bring a unique sound to the label.” Limp Bizkit is wasting no time getting to work, now that they have signed to the famed label, which was founded in 1991 in New Orleans. “As both an artist and someone who has signed artists, I can say without a doubt that Cash Money is at the top of their game,” Fred Durst said. “What attracted me to the label is not only their great taste and hustle, but their belief in their artists and the family atmosphere. Slim and Birdman allow their artists to be themselves and encourage creative output and continued development. I look forward to bringing my vision as a director as well as my voice to the label and to Limp Bizkit putting out some of our best music to date.” According to Ronald “Slim” Williams, the group is currently in Miami recording at the Hit Factory their inaugural Cash Money Records release. “We are excited to see the work and collaborations that come from the entire Cash Money family with the addition of Limp Bizkit,” says Slim. Cash Money Records has evolved into a powerhouse label, with major acts on the roster. Artists include Lil Wayne, Birdman, Nicki Minaj, DJ Khaled, Drake, Tyga, Busta Rhymes, Limp Bizkit, Cool & Dre, Jay Sean, Kevin Rudloff, Mack Maine, Mystikal and others.

Rappers and Fans Celebrate NBA All-Star Weekend in Orlando

(AllHipHop News) Over the weekend NBA players, fans and Hip-Hop artists alike swarmed the city of Orlando, Florida to celebrate the best of the best in the NBA. Things got started Friday night with the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, as J.Cole’s East team beat Common’s West team, 86-54, and Kevin Hart took home the MVP Trophy. Known for a weekend of big parties, NBA All-Star Weekend didnt disappoint this year. Some of the more popular parties included the Carmelo Anthony and Fabulous party, the Diddy event with live performances by The Runners, Clinton Sparks and the J Cole and John Wall hosted event. J. Cole made his rounds at several parties, while Lebron James, Floyd Mayweather and Kevin Hart, hosted a party that also included special guests Chris Paul, and Jay-Z’s official DJ, Young Guru. Dougie Fresh also held an event, with Biz Markie, while Drake and Lil’ Wayne also made their way to several parties to host and perform. Saturday’s festivities included the Skills Challenge – won by Tony Parker of San Antonio, the Three Point Competition – won by Kevin Love of Minnesota, and the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest – won by Jeremy Evans of Utah. Hip-Hop fans enjoyed a new twist on The Slam Dunk Competition this year, as Diddy assisted Chase Budinger of the Houston Rockets, who dressed as Woody Harrelson’s character in “White Man Can’t Jump,” Billy Hoyle. Chase flew over Diddy for a perfect score, but didn’t come out with the victory, despite the Bad Boy hype. Unofficial host Dwight Howard the hometown All-Star – rumored to be traded in the coming weeks – hosted his share of events as well. Howard held one event with Floyd Mayweather and several others as the headlining celebrity in his hometown. On Sunday, Nicki Minaj kicked off the NBA All-Star Game pre-show, performing several of her hits from Pink Friday in between the announcers introduction of the players for the East and West teams. Mary J Blige also sang the national anthem giving fans her own soulful rendition of America’s beloved song In addition, Chris Brown, Pitbull, Neyo performed during the half-time show, to Charles Barkley’s critical acclaim. The MVP of the NBA All-Star game was a toss up between Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and Kevin Durant, but Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder took it home after the East lost in the final seconds. Lebron turned the ball late in the game, helping the West take the victory. Houston will play host to the 2013 NBA All-Star Weekend next year, from February 15th-17th.

Andre 3000: No Outkast Reunion, New Solo album possible for 2012

Out of nowhere, Andre 3000 is back on our televisions, on our radios, and—by the end of the year—in our closets. The man they call 3 Stacks tells us what is and isn't in the works for the next year, from the status of a new OutKast album to his solo project In recent years, we've only heard Andre 3000 on remixes of songs by artists that we're surprised Dre's even heard of. He's the music industry's Bobby Fischer, only he's undefeated (and a better dresser). Rumors of a new OutKast album, a solo project, and the resurrection of Benjamin Bixby—Andre's nostalgically funky clothing line—have been percolating for years. We went to the source and chopped it up with our favorite ATLien to separate fact from fiction. The result? We got some good news, some bad news, and debunked one of hip-hop's most infamous misquotes. ··· GQ: You're a spokesman for Gillette now. How did that partnership come together? Andre 3000: Gillette is getting into a space where guys are now, where guys are wearing more hair on their faces. If you watch the history of Gillette, they pretty much stayed on the path of the clean-shaven guy. This is the first time in their history, in like 110 years, that they've ever had guys in ads with hair on their faces. It's a changing of the times and it says a lot about Gillette; they're kind of moving with fashion. GQ: I dig it. And you're resurrecting your clothing line, Benjamin Bixby? Andre 3000: Yes! But it will just be named Bixby this time. It's going to be real exciting, I can't say too much about it, but I can say this year and next year there's going to be a lot of cool things coming from me fashion-wise. Bixby is one of them. Also musically, sound-wise, and fashion. You'll see a lot of releases. GQ: So does that mean we can expect to hear the album we've all be waiting on? Andre 3000: It depends on which album you're talking about. GQ: A new 'Kast album! Andre 3000: There's been a lot of talk on the Internet about an OutKast album and I have to say that as of now, there are no plans for another OutKast album. There's a lot of music on the horizon. I've been living off the excitement of new artists. I've been privileged to have these new artists kind of reach out and grab back and say, "Hey, Andre, we want you on this song." So I've been taking those calls and for the last two years, I've been doing collaborations. So these new artists have kind of been keeping me alive. I've just really been feeding off of that and this year I think I'm planning to do a solo project. I don't know when it will come out, but hopefully it'll come out this year. As far as OutKast, I really don't know if or when that will happen. GQ: What's the new solo album going to be like? Andre 3000: The only thing I can really say is I'm going to get back to having fun because that's what it was all about when I started this in high school—with OutKast—those were like high school dreams. I'm 36 now, so I have grown-man dreams. This album will just be me being myself as normal. GQ: Random question: Drake quotes your song, "Spottieottiedopaliscious," and says, "Who else wants to fuck with Hollywood Cole." I've had heated debates with Atlanta natives who say it's "Hollywood Court" [a notoriously tough Atlanta project building.] Settle the debate once and for all! Andre 3000: Holly Court. And it's funny because J. Cole sampled it [playing off of the word "Cole"]. When they asked for clearance, I told him and his team that I wasn't saying "Cole," that I was saying "Court," but they wanted to use it anyway. [laughs] So I was like, "Okay." GQ: What do you think is the biggest misconception about you? Andre 3000: I've never gotten that question. This biggest misconception... that it's easy for me, I guess, is the biggest misconception. People think you kind of ride on this wave, this non-human wave, and I think that's kind of wrong to put that on entertainers. But I think that's a big thing for me. People talk about Andre 3000, they talk about fashion, they talk about film, they talk about music, and it's almost like they put you in this place, but it's work. It's hard work just like anything else. GQ: At this point in your career, after the sold out shows, movies, diamond-selling records, what keeps you inspired? Andre 3000: Creating. Creating. But it's always been that. It's funny, I don't even consider myself a rapper, I don't consider myself a designer, or even an actor. I kind of got that opportunity through the opportunities I had before. I was acting before I started rapping. These things just came. I just like creating stuff and trying to make good work, whatever it is. I don't care if it's designing toothbrushes. It's just making cool stuff to leave behind, that's all it is, it's nothing more. GQ: You're a perfectionist. Would you change anything about any of your songs? Andre 3000: I couldn't. I really couldn't change anything. As an artist you can sit and tinker with stuff forever. You can add and take away but I think that's kind of the importance of having someone over you saying, "We need this, this is a deadline." Sometimes those oppositions or those who push and pull are needed because we'll just sit and tinker forever. There are actually songs on The Love Below that were not finished, but that's how they are, that's how it came out. GQ: Like the last track, "A Life in the Day of Benjamin André (Incomplete)." Andre 3000: Exactly! We were up like three days straight drinking Red Bull or whatever, finishing that album. I just knew I wanted to put that on there, but it wasn't done, but it was enough. GQ: Expectations for your next album couldn't be higher. What are you most afraid of? Andre 3000: The biggest fear is me thinking about it too much—and that's why I'm just trying to catch the energy just like I've done before. What you all have heard before, I was not thinking, I was just going on cruise control. I was just going at it like any artist. When you look at the Wayne, when you look at the Kanye... I can tell when an artist is in the zone because they're not thinking and that's when you're at your best. So I'm just hoping, at this point, I don't let my history get in front of my future. You know what I mean?
